Statement Regarding NewRoad Media's 2014 "Close Encounters" segment covering January 5, 2000 Illinois UFO Sightings, airing on Science Channel (February, 2014, U.S.) and Discovery Channel Canada (January 5, 2014)

NewRoad Media’s “Close Encounters” segment covering the
January 5, 2000 Illinois UFO sightings is yet the most inaccurate retelling of
this landmark case thus far. As one who personally investigated this case in
January and February 2000, I was interviewed for this show and offered NewRoad
Media complete access to first-hand investigative documents, yet the segment takes
liberties that diverge from the actual events and appears to do so to enhance
dramatic content. NewRoad Media assured me that they would "get it
right" with this particular case, but they have failed. As a program that
is to air on Discovery “Science”, the scientific method appears to have taken a
back seat to careless special effects and a directorial style that leans toward
fiction, blatantly ignoring long-published facts of the case. While the trailer
for this series teased promise of a fresh take on the UFO
subject and what seemed to be some sense of integrity, the full force of the
digital realm has failed once again to accurately portray this event where five
Illinois police officers witnessed one or more huge, silent, triangular craft and
other witnesses reported a similarly sized rectangular object on the morning of
January 5, 2000, over several small Illinois towns just east of St. Louis,
Missouri.
